Cumberland Bean were first released back into the Paint Rock River in July of 2012.

Conservation Efforts: After being extirpated from Alabama, the Aquatic Biodiversity Center released 269 of the federally endangered Cumberland Bean into the Paint Rock River during July of 2012. The Aquatic Biodiversity Center cultured these mussels for 18 months using five gravid females from Hiwassee River donated by Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency .
