Wehle Nature Center at Midway (Bullock County)
The Wehle Nature Center at Midway is a land stewardship teaching/recreation facility located on twenty-five (25) acres of rolling hill country in Bullock County. It adjoins the 1,500-acre Forever Wild Wehle Recreation tract. It features conservation and environmental educational exhibits aimed at both students and adults. The Center is designed to enhance an appreciation for conservation and an understanding of man’s relationship with the environment. The Center hosts seasonal events as well as weekend nature presentations and viewing opportunities. The Wehle Nature Center is open to the public on some weekends.
Weeks Bay Reserve at Fairhope (Baldwin County)
The Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is located in Fairhope, Alabama, on Weeks Bay, an Outstanding National Resource Water (ONRW). Designated in February 1986, Weeks Bay Reserve became the sixteenth (16th) reserve added to the National Estuarine Research Reserve system. It is Alabama’s best remaining unspoiled estuary. The Reserve encompasses over 6,000 acres of land and water bottoms in an around Weeks Bay. The Reserve serves as a field laboratory for scientists and students providing unique opportunities to learn about estuarine and coastal ecology in a natural setting. Annually, the Reserve receives nearly 18,000 visitors including international visitors and local school students.
Foster Wetland Conservation Tract (Mobile County)
The Norman H. Foster Sr. Wetland Conservation Tract is a 40-acre donation of coastal wetland in Mobile County, received by the State Lands Division in December, 1996. The tract offers a fantastic opportunity for local education programs, outdoor experiences, and functions to preserve crucially important coastal wetlands. This benefits a number of local plants and animals typical of coastal habitats, as well as benefitting migratory species such as the peregrine falcon. Many species of waterfowl, songbirds, and birds of prey pass through, and often stop in coastal Alabama annually during seasonal migrations from breeding grounds to wintering grounds.
Wehle Land Conservation Center
The Wehle Land Conservation Center opened in October 2004. This beautiful educational facility is located in the heart of the Wehle Forever Wild Tract and features a series of restored cabins with educational information on historical periods of Alabama.This property also features fishing ponds, hiking and horseback riding trails and picnic facilities.
