Fishing in Logan Martin Reservoir

Logan Martin Reservoir is located in east-central Alabama on the Coosa River, approximately 30 miles east of Birmingham (the lake borders St. Clair and Talladega counties). The reservoir extends 48.5 miles from the dam upstream to Neely Henry dam and contains 15,263 acres.

Largemouth bass and spotted bass are the main draw for anglers. Largemouth bass growth has been excellent. Largemouth bass are abundant and well represented in the 12-18 inch range. Spotted bass are also abundant with many spots in the 14-21 inch range, representing some of the best values in the state. In fact the spotted bass numbers in the 17-20 inch range equaled the highest value ever recorded from the lake. Spotted bass growth has been good to excellent, and their condition is outstanding.

Recent collections of crappie revealed adequate numbers of black crappie in the 9 to 12 inch range.  The best times to crappie fish are generally early spring and fall.  Live minnows, or small jigs (1/32 - 1/16 ounce) topped off with 1" - 1.5" curltail grubs, tubes, and minnow imitation soft plastics are favorite baits to target crappie. 

White, hybrid and  striped bass make annual spring runs upriver and have created quite a fishery at the headwaters (below Neely Henry dam). Fishing starts to pick up in March and can continue through the summer for stripes and hybrids when the power company releases water to generate electricity. 

Stripes and hybrids can also be found in spring fed creeks and cold-water springs located throughout the lake during summer months. Some of the better creeks for striper fishing are Ohatchee and Choccolocco Creeks. The striped bass fishery fluctuates depending upon 1) reproduction and migration of striped bass down the Coosa from Weiss Reservoir and 2) stocking success into Logan Martin. Striped bass and hybrid striped bass will continue to be stocked at three to five fish per acre each year.
