Lake Eufaula

Description: Lake Eufaula is a 45,181 acre reservoir located on the Chattahoochee River along the border of southwest Georgia and southeast Alabama. The reservoir is formed by Walter F. George Dam, owned and operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office is located in Ft. Gaines, Georgia (229-768-2516), and a satellite office is located in Eufaula.

Licenses: Anglers between the ages of 16 and 65 are required to possess either a current Alabama State fishing license or a Georgia state fishing license.

Status of Fish Populations:

• Largemouth bass were not as abundant in 2014 compared to recent years but the average size was larger. Most largemouth bass collected during spring sampling were healthy and plump.
• Spotted bass abundance is increasing in the main river portions of Lake Eufaula.
• Black crappie were abundant based on October 2014 sampling, and the average size was larger than in recent years. Crappie over 13 inches (approximately 1 pound) were common, and many anglers reported catching limits of crappie in the spring.
• The catfish population is excellent. Channel catfish are still the most abundant catfish species, but blue catfish numbers are increasing with large specimens being caught both in the main reservoir and below the dam. Flathead catfish have been reported for several years below the dam, but recently several were caught from the main lake.

Additional Recreational Opportunities: The major city on this reservoir is Eufaula, Alabama, located along U.S. Highway 431. Eufaula contains a variety of restaurants, hotels, and shopping centers, as well as several historic attractions and festivals that can be accessed by contacting the Eufaula Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-524-7529.

The undeveloped northern section of Lake Eufaula falls within the 11,160 acre Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), headquartered on Highway 165 approximately 10 miles north of Eufaula. The Eufaula NWR provides vistors with excellent opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing, or observing wildlife. The Eufaula Refuge Manager can be contacted at (334) 687-4065. The Eufaula NWR is bordered on the south by Lakepoint State Park. This 1,220 acre park offers year round hotel, cabin, and camping accommodations, an 18-hole golf course, 3 boat access sites with a marina, and many more attractions. Lakepoint State Park headquarters is located off Highway 431 seven miles north of Eufaula, and can be contacted by calling (334) 687-8011.

Public Access: Boat access to Lake Eufaula is easily obtainable throughout the lake from the Georgia or Alabama side. Most U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or State Park boat ramps charge a nominal fee for anglers to launch a boat. These ramps on the Alabama side include Lake Point State Park, Cheneyhatchee Creek, White Oak Creek, Hardridge Park, and Highland Park. There are no fees charged at boat access sites owned by the city of Eufaula (Old Creek Town and Barbour Creek), or the public ramp at Thomas Mill Creek owned by Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division. Public angling piers are available at Old Creek Town Park and Highland Park).
