Forest Management Topic of Public Meeting at Guntersville State Park June 7

Alabama State Parks will host its second public meeting to discuss short-range forest management plans within Lake Guntersville State Park on Tuesday, June 7, 2016. The meeting will take place from 5-7 p.m. in the Goldenrod Room at the park lodge, 1155 Lodge Dr., Guntersville, AL 35976.

The meeting will be facilitated by the State Parks Natural Resources Section and is designed to make the public aware of forest management planning, former forest management projects and damage to the park’s forest infrastructure caused by the tornado of 2011. This damage resulted in the introduction of exotic plant species, which, if left unchecked, will continue to compete against native species and become a serious maintenance problem. The tornado also damaged trees that could not be salvaged at that time, but which remain a safety concern. Other factors influencing forest health will also be discussed.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to gain information and to provide feedback on the management plan.

If Americans with Disabilities Act accommodations are needed, please contact Lake Guntersville State Park Lodge at 256-571-5440. Requests should be made as soon as possible, but at least 72 hours before the scheduled meeting.

The Alabama State Parks Division relies on visitor fees and the support of other partners like local communities to fund the majority of their operations. To learn more about Alabama State Parks, visit www.alapark.com.
