Distinguishing Characteristics:
- Leaves alternate with rough margins.
- Stiff thorns and blue flowers in leaf axis
- Stems have fine hairs
- Usually grows in isolated clumps along shoreline, but can eventually surround shoreline
- Appearance and growth habit very similar to Polygonum spp
