STATUS:
Poorly known in Interior Plateau and western two-thirds of Coastal Plain, where it may be largely confined to floodplains of rivers and larger streams. Extends eastward along Alabama River to Montgomery County. A winter-breeding, burrowing salamander; uses floodplain pools as breeding sites. Few records available from Alabama, where populations may be disjunct. HIGH CONSERVATION CONCERN.
