Distinguishing Characteristics:
- Brown algae free-floating in the water column; the water itself appears brown.
- Most brown alga in Alabama are in the Euglena family, such as Trachelomonas spp.; and are commonly found in ponds that receive nutrients from organic wastes.
- Brown algae blooms can become dense and lead to fish kills in ponds, just like dense green algae blooms.
