SCIENTIFIC NAME:
Storeria dekayi ssp.
STATUS:
Common essentially statewide, but lack of records from much of southeastern Coastal Plain may reflect actual scarcity or absence there. One of Alabama's most common snakes north of Buhrstone/Lime Hills. Often encountered around human dwellings and erroneously called 'ground rattler.' Includes three intergrading species, S.d. dekayi (northern brownsnake), S.d. limnetes (marsh brownsnake), and S.d. wrightorum (midland brownsnake). Lowest Conservation Concern.
