Crayfish in Alabama
Alabama is home to 97 species of crayfish, more species than any other state. Some species are very widespread, occurring over large areas of eastern North American. However, many other species have very restricted distributions. Most crayfish species live in streams but some are adapted to other environments. Primary burrowers excavate tunnels (with characteristic chimneys) that reach the water table but have no direct connection to streams. Secondary and tertiary burrowers excavate tunnels that have connections to streams. Six species of Alabama crayfish live only in caves and associated underground streams.
