Why are hunting licenses important?
Due to unregulated harvest and habitat loss, white-tailed deer in Alabama were a rare sight in the early 1900s. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, along with some private individuals and groups, restocked deer throughout the state from the 1930s until the 1960s.
After decades of wildlife and habitat management and conservation efforts, Alabama’s deer population is estimated at nearly 2 million today. The triumphant return of white-tailed deer to Alabama’s landscape is one of the many conservation success stories made possible by hunters. The purchase of a hunting license also supports the restoration and conservation of other game and nongame species and their habitats such as the bald eagle, Eastern wild turkey, American alligator, gopher tortoise, Eastern indigo snake, black bear and many more.
Support wildlife conservation in Alabama by purchasing a hunting license today. Funds from the sale of licenses are used to manage and conserve Alabama's wildlife for future generations.
Purchase is not required to enter or win the Big Buck Challenge.
