What is a WMA?
A Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is public land in Alabama designated for conservation and hunting. These areas are managed by the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, with funding from hunting license sales and a federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition.
What is a WMA?
Yes! Each WMA has its own set rules and regulations. Always check the area map or talk to an Area Biologist for specific information if you have any questions. Regulations and contact information can be found at the Learn More button below.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO HUNT ON A WMA?
1. Hunting license (ages 16-64)
- All game license for deer and turkey.
- Small game OR wildlife heritage license for small game (except waterfowl).
- A HIP certification and state and federal stamps for waterfowl.
2. WMA AREA Permit
3. Valid WMA License
4. Daily Access
- All hunters must check in and out at the beginning and end of each hunt using the Outdoor Alabama App or a daily paper permit at WMA check stations or self-service kiosks.
Please note...
- A Wildlife Heritage License is valid in lieu of a resident State Hunting and Wildlife Management Area License for small game hunting, excluding waterfowl.
- Contact Your Area Biologist: For questions about hunting seasons, prescribed burns, or specific area regulations, always reach out to the biologist listed on the WMA map.
- Follow Updates on Facebook: Stay informed about burn plans and other important updates via the Alabama Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries Division's Facebook page
WHERE CAN I FIND A WMA AREA PERMIT?
WMA Permits can be found on the WMA page of Outdoor Alabama. Look for the listing of WMAs and select the WMA you wish to hunt.
HOW DO I CHECK IN/OUT OF A WMA?
On the app, you will select WMA check-in, then select the WMA you are hunting, the species you are hunting, and press ‘Check-In”. When checking out, select the time you left, the species harvested, and the species observed. Complete the check-in before or upon arrival and check-out when leaving the WMA.
If using paper (although we highly suggest using the app): Fill out the “Check-In" tear-off portion of the daily permit and deposit it in the self-service box at the WMA. Keep the "Check-Out" portion and deposit it in the same box when you leave.
