Buying Hunting and Fishing Licenses Online Becomes More Secure

CONTACT: Information and Education
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) announces that Alabama resident applicants will not be required to provide social security numbers (SSNs) to purchase Alabama hunting and fishing licenses online and at participating retailers who issue licenses electronically. In cooperation with the Alabama Department of Public Safety, the ADCNR will still require resident license purchasers to provide their driver license numbers when buying a license on the Internet or from an approved license retailer. The ADCNR will then securely collect the license purchaser’s SSN electronically by using the driver license number. Federal law requires the collection of the SSN.
“In today’s society, identity theft has become easier and easier,” said ADCNR Commissioner M. Barnett Lawley. “Using this new procedure will make it safer for consumers to purchase licenses online and protect them from predators who steal the identities of citizens by illegally obtaining a person’s social security number or other personal information.” Additionally, verifying driver license numbers helps cuts down on fraud.
