Sport Fish Restoration

After a brief lesson on groundwater students explore the bubbling springs. The springs are one of the many reasons to visit Tannehill State Park.

The EnviroScape model helps students see how pollutants such as mud or silt can be carried through the watershed.

Mrs. Morrison explains the effect pollution has on Alabama's freshwater fish.

A spring is where groundwater becomes surface water.  It is refreshingly cool.

The main purpose of the sluice is to carry water to the grist mill. However, it is also home to many species of mollusks.

Maurice Jackson shares a special moment with a student who found a mussel.

While crossing the bridge, Mr. Jackson encouraged us to listen to the sounds of the creek below.

Biologist Jerry Moss told us about an exotic species now common in Alabama, the Asiatic clam.

"Look at the aquatic snail I caught!"

Applesnails
are one of many exotic species that have been accidentally introduced in Alabama.

Students assisted with the seine. The seine was used to catch minnows and other fish.

With the assistance of Mr. Jackson, this student uses the seine to catch minnows for everyone to see.

It is important to collect fish quickly.

We used the examples on this board to identify our fish.

Biologist Doug Darr helped us sample the water for invertebrates.

We were eager to see some of Alabama's wildlife.

Mr. Jackson points out that aquatic invertebrates like to hide under rocks.

Thanks for the great fun!
