Thompson Appointed Alabama Marine Police Director
July 11, 2011
Conservation Commissioner N. Gunter Guy Jr. announces that Walter S. “Steve” Thompson is the new director of the Alabama Marine Police Division. Thompson most recently served as Deputy Chief of Police with the Montgomery, Ala. Police Department.
“Steve Thompson brings a wealth of knowledge to our Department,” Guy said. “He has experience in supervising large numbers of personnel, interacting with local, state and national organizations, community relations and administrative procedures. Those skills, along with his vast training in law enforcement, will be valuable in this job.
The Alabama Marine Police Director supervises the routine safety patrol of Alabama’s waterways, which is handled by approximately 57 field officers. In addition, the position oversees the registration of all pleasure boats, licensing of boat operators, boat and marine accessory theft, a statewide boating education program, and assists other state, local and federal officers in enforcement activities relating to homeland security, maritime and waterway smuggling, drug interdiction, and other serious crimes committed in the marine environment. The Marine Police Division also administers the waterway hazard and control marking program, presently overseeing more than 1,600 hazard and control markers and zones.
Thompson says he is ready to serve the citizens of the state. “It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this organization,” he said of his appointment to the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. “Alabama’s Marine Police have an outstanding record of promoting safety and boating education, and I hope to continue that.
“I like challenges,” Thompson added. “After 31 years in law enforcement, I believe that my experience and contacts will help me to build bridges between this organization and other law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Alabama. I look forward to working with our staff and will encourage them to look at new ways of doing old things. There might be ways we can do things differently and even more effectively,” he said.
Thompson is a graduate of FBI National Academy located in Quantico, Va., and a current member of the Alabama Chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates.
Prior to his police experience, Thompson served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is a native of Montgomery and resides there with his wife Robin, a flight attendant with Delta Airlines. They are members of Heritage Baptist Church.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
