Alabama Photographer Places in International Competition

August 13, 2004

Tuskegee resident Tes Jolly earned a prestigious honor at the recent Outdoor Writers Association of America, Inc. (OWAA) annual conference in Spokane, Washington.

Jolly was awarded third place in the Natural History Art/Photo category, which recognizes excellence in communicating the value, enjoyment and/or instruction of flora and fauna. Her submission, “Pipevine Swallowtail on Thistle,” was published on the cover of the Outdoor Alabama 2003 calendar. Jolly competed against 28 other entries including images from the Colorado Wildlife calendar and the Wildlife Journal, among others.

Outdoor Alabama magazine and calendar is published by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Managing Editor Kim Nix has worked with Jolly on several occasions. “Tes is not only a wonderful photographer, but she volunteers her time to mentor others. She has been an archery instructor for the Department of Conservation’s Becoming an Outdoors Woman program for many years,” she said. “The women in the class can really relate to Tes and she has an enthusiasm that is contagious.”

Headquartered in Montana, OWAA is an international outdoor communicators’ association with more than 1,600 members who are professional writers, editors, photographers, artists, broadcasters, video producers, book authors and lecturers.
