No February 2013 Deer Season in Alabama

January 29, 2013

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources wants hunters to know that the proposal for an extended deer season in southwest Alabama refers to the 2014 season, not the current hunting season. “Deer season will end as scheduled on Thursday, January 31, 2013,” said Conservation Commissioner N. Gunter Guy Jr.

“When word got out that the Conservation Department will propose an extended season, rumors got started that it is for the current season, and that is not the case,” Guy said. We don’t want anyone to get a ticket for deer hunting out of season, but that is what will happen if people hunt after January 31.”

A proposal for a 2014 February deer season will be presented to the Conservation Advisory Board at its meeting on February 9, but it will not be voted on until a future meeting. Advisory board rules require that no regulation is voted on during the same meeting it is introduced. This is to give the board time to hear feedback from the public and do any necessary research on the issue.

Guy said the boundaries for the proposed February extension in southwest Alabama are still being fine-tuned and will not be revealed until the February 9 meeting.

The Conservation Advisory Board meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in the State Capitol Auditorium in Montgomery and begins at 9 a.m. on February 9. Those wishing to address the board must register between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
