Amy Sorensen Sets World Mark Fishing Smith Lake

Amy Sorensen Sets World Mark Fishing Smith Lake

A News Release from the International Game Fish Association on August 1, 2000

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) has notified Amy Sorensen of Mount Olive, Alabama that her 21 pound 9 ounce striped bass (landlocked) is a new junior world record. The 9-year-old qualified in the girl’s smallfry division.

Amy made the catch in April while fishing on a private boat with her parents on Smith Lake, Alabama. They were trolling live shad when the big fish struck her bait, and Amy landed the catch after an awesome 11-minute battle. Amy state, "I wish it would have weighed more, but that was the biggest fish I have ever caught." Her angling accomplishment will be reported in the next issue of IGFA’s International Junior Angler newsletter that is sent to members in over 50 countries and Amy will receive a colorful world record certificate. Her name will also appear in the 2001 World Record Game Fishes book that is published by IGFA annually.

The IGFA Junior World Record Program, which is sponsored by JohnsonTM, a tackle brand of Pure FishingTM, includes 60 species each of freshwater and saltwater fish. There are four record divisions and 480 record possibilities. Records are maintained for males and females in a "smallfry" division through age 10 and in a "junior" division for anglers 11 through 16. Junior anglers do not have to kill their fish in order to quality for a world record, and catch and release is strongly encouraged. There is no charge to submit a record and membership in IGFA is not required. However, a junior membership in the IGFA is available for $15 per year. Members receive the quarterly International Junior Angler newsletter, IGFA Rule Book, periodic world record updates, Junior Angler Club hat, patch, decal, and junior membership card.
